Wet Rot is a form of timber decay which grows on porous surfaces with very High Levels of Moisture Content, Commonly From Poor Ventilation Below The Floor, Rising Or Penetrating Damp, Water Leaks Etc.

WET ROT

Wet rot is different from wet rot in the sense that it can travel through a building taking its own moisture supply, and can travel between plaster and brick work as well as wood. Wet rot can cause severe damage if it is not treated.

Treating Wet Rot

Once Danford Brewer & Ives have identified the problem to be wet rot, the area will have to be properly ventilated to allow the wood to dry and the root cause of the problem will have to be solved. Any damaged timber will have to be cut out, replaced where necessary and potentially sprayed with a fungicidal treatment.

Although treating wet rot can seem very disruptive, it is necessary to rectify the problems to stop it spreading any further and perhaps lasting structural damage. Danford Brewer & Ives provide effective wet rot treatment in a quick and hassle-free way.

Wet rot early signs

Knowing the early signs of wet rot is integral to applying an effective treatment to stop the spread of the fungus that causes timbers to decay.
Like dry rot, wet rot is caused by high levels of moisture and wet or damp conditions.
It can be more difficult to detect because it often spreads initially in hidden or secluded locations.
The most obvious indicator is its smell; the wood fungus that causes wet rot gives off a pungent odour that will begin to spread throughout the house.

Fixing wet rot damage

If any timbers in your home have been affected by wet rot or if the fungus has spread through a building, then it is still possible to fix the damage.

The source of damp or high moisture levels in the home that cause wet rot in the first place needs to be removed to stop it from spreading further.

Timbers that are too cracked or that have begun to crumble will need to be removed and replaced with new ones that have undergone treatment.

They should also be coated in a fungicide that protects against wood fungus.

FAQ

Is wet rot a fungus?

Wet rot is caused by fungal spores that are found in the atmosphere and are activated by the presence of high levels of moisture within wood or timber.

Wet rot is, essentially, a type of wood fungus – just as dry rot is – and as a living species attacks the wood and the timber while seeking nourishment.
That process causes affected timber to decay.

One of the most prominent early signs of needing to treat rotten wood in your home or commercial property is a pungent, mushroom-like smell it gives off.

How does wet rot occur?

Wet rot is caused by fungal spores which, given the right conditions, will begin to break down timber and decay wood.

It is caused by several fungal species, the most common being Coniophora puteana or cellar fungus, which needs high levels of moisture of around 50% to survive, thrive and cause the timber to soften

The fungal spores that cause wet rot are present in the air, but it tends to grow on a porous wooden surface with high moisture content.

That’s why wet rot occurs in damp conditions, and why leaks and drainage issues are the main catalyst within households.
